Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS)

CMS is the second-largest school district in North Carolina with 170+ schools. School assignment is based on your home address, but CMS also offers magnet programs, language immersion, and IB programs that require separate application.

Best school areas by neighborhood

School quality varies by neighborhood. Myers Park, Dilworth, and SouthPark tend to have higher-rated public schools. Ballantyne and Matthews also have strong suburban schools. Fort Mill, SC has highly rated schools just over the border.

Charter and private options

Charlotte has growing charter school options including Socrates Academy, Community School of Davidson, and Lake Norman Charter. Private options include Charlotte Latin, Providence Day, and Charlotte Country Day. Apply early — waitlists are common.
